AU’s 2024 Migration Strategy: Don’t let rumours distract you from your next step!

Jan 24 AU’s 2024 Migration Strategy

Last 11 December 2023, Australia released its Migration Strategy, marking a big step in its migration landscape. This government strategy lists eight important steps and over 25 promised reforms - most of which may have an impact on skilled work and international students.

Most of the changes are geared towards addressing skills gaps and filling shortages, simplifying the migration system, and strengthening the integrity and quality of international education. So if you’re wondering whether these changes will have an impact on your journey - the answer is probably yes.

If you're at the beginning of your journey, these changes might feel exciting. However, if you're already underway with your plans, it could be frustrating—we understand. Adjusting plans and timelines due to such changes can be challenging. But don’t worry! We’re here to help!

If you're feeling confused or frustrated by contradicting information or wondering if these policies are official or in effect already, you're in the right place. This blog aims to clear things up and give you concrete steps to take in the meantime.

So, are the changes in the Migration Strategy official?

Yes and no. The government announced these plans, but they're still working on the details. So, while they're on the agenda, some of them are not in effect yet.

We just know the changes are happening- it’s what the government committed to. But how, to whom, and when these changes will happen are not yet final. It takes a long time before policy intention turns to implementation. What is initially announced may be different to what is finally implemented as the policies are studied and reviewed over time.

What can you do during this period?

We understand that this level of uncertainty can be challenging especially for those whose journeys may be impacted so here’s what you can do as we navigate the current situation and prepare for future changes:

  • Sustain your current strategy: And if you don’t have one, consult a Registered Migration Agent and design one. Eligibility criteria aside, one thing immigration values is consistency because it shows your genuine commitment to being a productive member of Australian society and contributing to the economy.
    • Keep up with your planned tasks, be it English language proficiency or a Skills Assessment.
    • Gain relevant work experience, aligning with your current migration strategy.
  • Exercise caution and patience: Patience is key when waiting for policies to take shape since we cannot predict the impact until we know the details for sure.
    • Do not make drastic decisions regarding your strategy at this stage - everything is still uncertain so it’s best to stick to your current one until things settle down.
    • Be cautious about unverified information online or rumours you hear. Social media groups are great for socialisation but they’re also hotbeds for gossip and personal interpretations of these reforms which can be misleading.
  • Keep updated and prepare: While the details of reforms included in the Migration Strategy are not finalised yet, there are still some things you can do to prepare:
    • Follow official sources for information updates such as Home Affairs or reputable migration agencies. It’s prudent to prioritise verified information from official sources for accuracy. If you’ve got a Registered Migration Agent looking after your case, you can sign up for their newsletter for verified updates or reach out to them to clarify the practicalities of the situation for you.
    • Collect and update your documents. The immigration process requires you to provide personal and professional information, so why not start listing and collecting the needed documents and information and organise a list on a spreadsheet to have everything on easy access.
