It takes two to Tango

So, you’re thinking of applying for the 190 or 491 Skilled Visa? That’s fantastic! But do you understand how the process actually works? These visas are not a solo dance, you need a state or territory to “partner” with you. And like the Tango, there are a lot of steps involved in reaching your goal, so knowing what is coming next is key. Let’s break it down into five simple steps.

Step 1: Dance to the Department’s tune

First of all you need to know what the requirements are. The 190 and 491 generally require that you are under the age of 45, have at least a competent English level, a minimum of 65 points, and a positive Skills Assessment in your profession. Working on meeting all the Visa requirements? Brilliant! But don’t forget there may also be other requirements for State Nomination, and you need to meet those too! Make sure you know the specifics for your situation before going any further.

Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty. Unlike the majority of Australian visas, you must be invited to apply for the 190 or 491. That’s right, it’s an invite-only dance party! So, want to know how you can obtain one of these beautiful, life-changing invitations? Read on.

Step 2: It’s a slow dance

Usually, the first step is to submit an expression of interest (EOI). The EOI is not a visa application, and you can update your EOI at any time with changes to your English score, your relationship status, or anything else relevant to your application. Within your EOI you will be asked which state/territory you are hoping to get nominated by, which will then be informed of your interest.

Now this is where general information gets a bit tricky to give. The next step depends on the state you are applying to be nominated by and also on the current requirements (which change often).

Step 3: Dress the part and strut your stuff!

Remember that each state/territory has their own preferences. Each one is entitled to choose who they do and don’t want to support. This means you need to understand what they want, and if you don’t, you could be wasting your time. Some states may prioritise people with the highest number of points, or the highest English score, whilst other states prefer people who have already lived and worked locally for a certain period of time. When you are working on your strategy, comparing the different state requirements is a valuable exercise, as you may find one that is more likely to sponsor you and then you can decide whether moving interstate may be of benefit.
Not everyone who applies for State Nomination is successful, so don’t go into the process with a wishy-washy application. You need to impress the state, you need to make them believe you will be a true asset! In addition, states are not always open for nomination or may have met their quota for your occupation, so if you leave it till the very end of your current visa, you could run out of time. The sooner you apply, the more breathing room you’ll have.

If your state decides to nominate you, you will be notified. Now with the state’s support behind you, it is time to open up that exclusive invitation!

Step 4: Put on your dancing shoes!

With invitation in hand, you can pull up to the party! Once you receive your invitation to apply for the Skilled Visa, you will likely have only 60 days to do so. Have your application prepared in advance to avoid last minute stress - especially as some State Nominations come through quicker than anticipated, meaning the clock starts ticking! Don’t forget, you automatically earn points through State Nomination: the 190 gives you an extra 5 points, and the 491 gives you 15. Everyone receives these points, so it won’t give you an advantage over others, but it may influence which visa you apply for.

All that’s left now is to submit your visa application. Go for it!

Step 5: Dance the night away!

Once your visa is granted, that’s it! Celebrate this amazing achievement!
Remember that with state nominations you are required to commit to living and working in a particular location for a period of time. Considering your long-term future, the effort and wait are worth it, so don’t delay choosing your “partner” state or regional area.
