Skills Assessment

What is Skills Assessment?

Skills Assessment is an application you need to go through when applying for General Skilled Migration visas, some Employer Sponsored visas and some Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Skills Assessments are issued by relevant skills assessing authorities which are organisations responsible for ensuring your skills meet the standards they set for your occupation.

Skills Assessment

Where do I start?

A Skills Assessment may open doors for you! Get our help to understand if a Skills Assessment is required for your visa strategy. Once you define your occupation, you need to find out which authority is relevant to your occupation. Each assessing authority has its own assessment requirements, procedures, timeframes and charges. Understanding this is understanding if there’s an actual visa pathway for you.

Process

How does it work?

Once you know which authority is relevant to your occupation, go through all the criteria. Understand if there’s any qualification criteria and if you’d meet them. It’s equally important to understand the requirements to assess your work experience and the type of document you’ll need as evidence. For qualifications and/or work experience overseas, you may also need NAATI certified translations of your documents.

This is where people get confused…

No. A Skills Assessment is not a visa. This is a separate application (not with the Department of Immigration) with a relevant authority. If you’re in Australia during this process, you’ll need to hold a visa, regardless of your Skills Assessment process.

No. There are a few permanent visas that do not require Skills Assessment. However, most options do, that’s why this is such an important step in your migration journey. Having a positive skills assessment increases your chances to migrate or stay permanently in Australia considerably.

Some authorities may consider relevant work experience to substitute for the formal qualification. That will depend on your occupation and the relevant authority.

A good way to start is to search for your occupation on the list. The column on the right will give you an indication of which authority to contact. From there, talk to our Migration Agent regarding a full assessment to understand if you meet the criteria and the evidence you will need to provide. Explore more.
